About the project

Director of Photography and Producer Jarrod Boord spent days out in the field to capture the lakes like they have never been filmed before, taking the general public on a tour of the otherwise hard to access natural wonders. The Western District Lakes wetlands (Ramsar site no. 268), an iconic feature of the Corangamite region, was listed in 1982. It consists of nine large lakes on the Victorian Volcanic Plains between Winchelsea and Camperdown. The lakes system supports a large number and diversity of bird species with records as high as 100,000+ birds at one time with certain wetlands recognised international for their values as bird habitat through the Ramsar convention. A total of 70 species of wetland bird have been recorded within the site. The list includes 20 species that are listed under international migratory agreements CAMBA, JAMBA, ROKAMBA and the Bonn Convention, and 26 species listed as migratory or marine under the EPBC Act. The lakes also support number of federally listed threatened species, including the migratory shorebirds listed above, Corangamite water skink, Spiny Peppercress (lepidium ascersonii), Salt-lake Tussock-grass (poa sallacustrisis) as well as many state-listed threatened species.

What we loved about the project

Spending time in nature, connecting with country and getting to understand a special ecosystem whilst capturing it for all to enjoy.

The Challenges

Our team has worked hard on the storyline and postproduction. The key task was to portray the beauty of the landscape using drones and stage effects in the studio.

What the client said about the project

Working with Jarrod on the Western District Lakes project was so seamless, he was able to take our half formed ideas and turn them into a powerful film that really shines a light on the majesty and significance of the lakes- he really is an talented artist, who can clearly translate our ideas into something that captures the hearts and mind of the viewer.
